I have been a member of tribal pages for many, many years and have several trees on here and quite a few are 'paid' for. However, when I try to download a gedcom of my tree from Tribalpages I end up with a long list of gibberish. Can someone please advise on how to do this.

Hi Les,

I think the operative word in the question is "download", in which case your instructions don't work.

Having clicked on the "Backup/Download" option, the next step would be "You can download your saved tree". This provides the option to create a GED file on your computer.

Ian Marr

Hi Ian

Files

Backup / Download

Upload GEDCOM

Surely I do not have to put every period and comma, as it is common sense to follow the instructions.

I could have complicated things by saying that if you are a FREE member you cannot DOWNLOAD unless you were a MEMBER before a certain date.

Guys, I don't want to get involved in a long heated discussion, but it struck me that possibly Mr/Ms Spiro doesn't realise that to read a GEDCOM file, you have to upload it to a family history program on your computer - Legacy, Rootsmagic etc, one of the free ones is quite adequate, otherwise just opening the GEDCOM will give lines and lines of gobblegook.

Just a thought, but not immediately obvious if you've never done it before.

Anyway, not worth getting heated about, life's too short for that.

Hi Pauline,

It would appear that you're the only one with a temperature problem. Certainly, Les & I wouldn't descend to that sort of thing, for a start I have too much respect for Les given all the help he has provided for such a long time.

Hello to all those who have responded to my request.

In the many, many years I have been with tribal pages I have never needed to join the forum. I think now, I will join in more often.

I had already worked out how to do download a gedcom but couldn't understand why it opened in gobblygook language. Thanks to all for your advice and thanks to Pauline for advising that after I make the gedcom (saved in my download folder) I then have to upload it to a program. Silly me, I thought All I had to do was to 'open' it. We learn something every day. Many thanks team!

You're welcome.

My own personal preference is Legacy, but there are a lot of free programs out there.

Good luck.

Les, I'm confused by your email. I did not say I did not have a family tree on my PC. I have had several family trees for many years. For some reason I did not click (on that day) that after downloading a ged file to my download folder, I must then upload it to one of the programs (FTM in this case). I have managed ged files before, so I don't understand why I couldn't do it this time. Oh, well, we all have our bad days, especially when at my age. Have a nice day.
