I thought it was free?!

Only been using this site for a few weeks and thought it was brilliant. Created a few wee trees to keep things simple (to share with different branches of the family.) Most are now saying - Annual subscription has expired, make payment. Is this a glitch or have I misunderstood?

Thanks Alan, I just don’t understand what’s up. The guidelines seem clear enough, but what’s happening with my trees doesn’t match what they say. I messaged them too but haven’t had an answer. I’m really disappointed as I thought the site was great and was happily going to recommend it to my family. Hopefully a glitch rather than a change of rules!

Cathy, thanks for your post.

Please read my reply to Alan's missive. I won't repeat what I wrote here.

I also get the expired subscription on my free site. But when I click on the people names it goes to my site and works as usual.

Yes, its likely to be glitch in the Tribalpages system. If not, some members will not continue with a tree in Tribalpages.

Or, maybe they are just hoping some members will think they are now obliged to make a payment and some will do so. If that's what they think it is not a good business practice.

As D D said you can click and actually see everything! I wasn’t brave enough to try before, lol!

Thanks D D. Hadn’t thought to even try that! Was convinced they Were just looking for money! But it’s the same here, I can look at the tree and names and whatnot.

Pretty off putting though!

I used to use the Free version, then subscribed for a year, when I did not renew it I found I could no longer access the site. Something fishy is going on as Tribal say there is a Free version, I don't know what is going on. I have had a subscription renewal request but I don't want to renew. I have messaged Tribal will see if I get a response. I did buy the CD version so have a copy now but it can't be edited of course. I would like to take a Gedcom copy for my computer the instructions say there is a Gedcom menu item to do this but I can't see it???

I have downloaded the GEDcom to my computer and then uploaded to Ancestry so I could have the tree there for family to access who have done DNA testing.

NOTE: GEDcom uploaded well to Ancestry but it does not carry over any of the pictures, stories, documents, etc. I suppose it is possible the upload process with Ancestry does not pull them in but I suspect they are not included in the GEDcom file extracted from Tribalpages end. Don't want you to solely rely on saving a GEDcom thinking everything will be there. It also had a few minor glitches on places of death when it uploaded to Ancestry but it was easily fixed there.

I prefer the tools and like the navigation on Tribalpages more than Ancestry and have used it since 2013. But it has problems lately with the renewed subscription issue. I have a large tree with up-to-date deluxe subscription. A family member has a smaller site with a few entries. I don't know if she had free version or subscription. She added me as guest. I was getting her newsletters saying her subscription was past due. Now I get her newsletters stating newsletters will no longer be a part of free subscription and require upgrades.

Further, her tree and my tree are on the mobile app. Her tree opens with her few entries but my tree won't open on the app. It seems to be inactive or locked up. I can't find a way to delete her tree from the app, nor can I delete myself from her tree from my account dashboard. I suspect that my tree won't open on the mobile app due to her not renewing her subscription.

The only way I can access my tree is through browser but not on the mobile app from either my phone or iPad apps. I have had to abandon the app. I have requested help from technical support and received no response.

Thanks for your reply. I have successfully saved my tree as a GEDcom file, but as you say it does not carry across the pictures and stories. I too prefer Tribal to other platforms, but am annoyed that I started with the free one and after subscribing once thereafter it is no longer free. I have purchased a the DVD of my tree that is offered periodically 2 for 1 so gave a copy to family and kept one myself, obviously this cannot be updated but it is nevertheless a nice keepsake. I am now pondering another method of recording everything as I don't want to continue paying the sub for Tribal. Best wishes and thanks again.

Tribalpages feels as if it is going down hill as far as support. It makes me nervous when I see these issues beginning to happen. I wonder if it has gotten too big for individuals they have in support to handle. I would hate for something to go wrong with Tribalpages down the road after all the work I have put in and all the pictures, documents, and stories I have included. I regularly backup my site and always felt I was safe with at least a saved GEDcom file on my computer. I was not aware until recently the GEDcom did not include all the pictures, documents, and stories. I hesitate to get the CD or flash drive because I will still add to my site and the the CD/flash drive will become outdated. Plus, I really would only want it to be able to pluck my pics, stories, documents off it if needed. I am not sure I would be able to.

I have decided, since I have the same tree on Ancestry, to begin the process of loading all my pics, documents, and stories there as a safeguard as well as continuing with Tribalpages. I still prefer Tribalpages and it is kind of nice to have a window open into Tribalpages and Ancestry and flip back and forth as I am working in one or the other. I only had the tree on Ancestry for family that have done the DNA testing to be able to look up individuals. I didn't initially think I needed to include all the attachments. But I guess it is time to expand it more now to be safe.

Good luck with your genealogy! I still have not gotten an aswer why I can't get into my tree with Tribalpages mobile app. I have both my tree and my cousin's tree on the mobile. Hers will open and mine will not. I can't find a way to drop her site out of mobile app and just leave mine there. She has not been maintaining her tree and I don't think she logs in any longer. It is an account that receives the expired subscription notifications. I don't know if that is why I can't open mine since they both seem to be married on the mobile app. but my Deluxe account is fully up to date with payment. It is frustrating I can't open my account there. Support does not respond when I have contacted them. This is why I feel they are going down hill. Something does not feel right with it.

That’s probably wise. I’m new enough here that I’ve not put a huge amount of work in (it’s usually Findmypast I use) but it’s still frustrating.

Hi, i am also concerned and wondering how safe the data is now, I am considering removing my photos and other more personal information completely and setting up something else for myself.

Thanks to a previous answer I discovered that although it’s saying it has expired and is requesting a paid sub, it still actually works! Not ideal though! I put wee trees on here to share with family but it looks pretty poor when it says it’s expired! I emailed them too but haven’t had any response.
